BERNINA NORTHLAND FASHION AWARDS
There are 3 wearable arts categories and 7 fashion categories to choose from accommodating young, beginner level sewists and artists through to more experienced sewists and artists
Each category has a broad ranging definition to allow your creativity to blossom within. We encourage you to explore your creativity while having fun in the process, culminating in showcasing your creative talent in this prestigious event.
As a designer you are eligible for the Northland Designer of the Year award and the Extreme Elegance award on top of the category awards.
As a model you are eligible for the Northland Top Model award.

Wearable Art
An original garment that is art made to be worn. Free from constraints, the design of your garment is limited only by your imagination. No theme and no limits to the materials you use however we do encourage you to use the sustainable fashion precepts of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ when sourcing materials for your garment.
Cosplay
A garment of your own creation that portrays an existing character from a book, film or video game. Create the costume of your chosen character from suitable materials, however we do encourage you to use the sustainable fashion precepts of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ when sourcing materials for your garment.
Masquerade
Design an amazing mask using any medium. Large and small, weird and wonderful, the masquerade is all about having fun while remaining anonymous. So that all the attention is on the mask the model is to wear all black clothing.
Open Street Wear/ Day Wear
An original fashion garment designed to be worn on the street during the day.
While your design process may begin with a purchased or repurposed pattern, the final garment is more than ‘just following a pattern’ and clearly demonstrates your creative point of view as a designer.
Student Street Wear / Day Wear
An original fashion garment designed to be worn on the street during the day.

Open Evening Wear
An original fashion garment designed to be worn at an evening event. Perhaps a gorgeous ball gown, a tailored trouser suit, or some other lavish garment suitable for an evening occasion.
Student Evening Wear
An original fashion garment designed to be worn at an evening event. Perhaps a gorgeous ball gown, a tailored trouser suit, or some other lavish garment suitable for an evening occasion.
Sustainable Fashion
An original fashion garment designed using the sustainable fashion precepts of recycle, upcycle, and the reuse of resources.
Special Category 2023 – Elizabethan Fashion
An original fashion garment to encapsulate your creative interpretation of the second Elizabethan era that ended with the death of the British Queen in 2022. While your design process may begin with a purchased or repurposed pattern, the final garment is more than ‘just following a pattern’ and clearly demonstrates your creative point of view as a designer.
